Attendance Policy
Course Syllabus/Parent Letter

Teachers will include the following points of information in their course syllabus/parent letter, distributed at the beginning of each semester:

  1. Classroom participation, homework, quizzes, tests, and projects contribute to grades given in all classes. Absences adversely affect the grade earned in the class.

  2. Classroom participation grades are given for daily activities that include written and verbal responses to questions during teachers' lectures, discussion participation, and hands-on classroom activities.

  3. By law, teachers must provide make up assignments, including participation assignments, for all legitimate absences, those absences that are documented by parent or doctor's notes on file in the Attendance Office. Students must bring notes to clear an absence to the Attendance Office before school, nutrition, lunch or after school.  Notes must be legible, include the birthdate of the student, date of absence(s) and a current phone number.  Students cannot make up work for truancies (#3) or uncleared (U) absences.
    D.   Parents requesting early dismissal of a student (for appointments, court, etc.) MUST    send a writtten note, including a correct phone number and birthdate to the Attendance Office berfore 10:00a.m.   Telephone requests will not be accepted.


  1. School Activities Restrictions

    Students with more than 10 days or 10 days in ANY ONE CLASS absent from each semester will be restricted from the following school activities:

    1. Winter Formal (10th grade by credit through 12th grade)

    2. Prom

    3. Graduation Ceremony and Activities (Grad Night, Senior Extravaganza)

    4. Other school dances

    5. Reward assemblies


  2. Days Absent to Prohibit Participation

    1. A Maximum of 10 full days or 10 days IN ANY ONE CLASS is allowed.

    2. At the 11th absence FOR ANY REASON, the student's name will appear on the Non-Participation List.



  3. Appeal and Privilege Recapture Process for Excused Absences Only

    1. Appeals may be made for absences which exceed the maximum allowable Per semester (11 or more).

      1. Health-Related Absences - If a student has a verifiable health emergency such as hospitalization, chronic illness, or extended care treatments, an appeal may be made at least two weeks prior to the event by filling out an Appeals Form and providing appropriate documentation.

      2. Bereavement - If the student experiences the death of an immediate family member, an appeal may be made with proper documentation two weeks prior to the event. The maximum allowable period for bereavement is 5 days.

      3. Extraordinary Circumstances - If a student has an extraordinary circumstance causing excessive absences, an appeal may be made.

    2. Privilege Recapture is the process whereby a student may exchange an hour of absence for an hour of school service. This service will not result in the erasure of the absence in school records. The student will still need to file an Appeal and the Attendance Committee will assign the student service.

    Non-Participation Lists will be posted in classrooms, offices, and display cases. An attendance check is part of the graduation clearance process for all Potential Graduates.
