Students Tested

State and District Requirement
Grades 9 and 10
  • All students in the above mentioned grades whether or not they are enrolled in a physical education class.
  • All students must take physical education classes in high school for 2 years (freshman and sophomore). Students who were freshman in the Class of 2008 were the first class required to “pass” FITNESSGRAM in order to receive the exemption for physical education classes for 2 years (junior and senior). A “passing” score has been defined as meeting the healthy fitness zone for 5 out of 6 components. Students who do not meet the healthy fitness zone in 5 out of 6 components in grade 9 or 10 will continue to take physical education classes until they “pass” or graduate.
Students Excluded from Testing
  • There is no parent opt-out for this test.
  • All students must take as much of the test as they are physically able to take.
  • Students who are either ill, injured, or enrolled for one-half or less of the work normally required for full-time students are eligible for a temporary exemption.
  • A District may exempt a student for up to two years during grades 10 to 12. Beginning with the freshman class of 2008, this exemption will apply only if the student meets the healthy fitness zone for 5 of the 6 components in grade 9. Students who do not meet this standard continue taking physical education classes until they meet 5 out of 6 components or they graduate.
Test Purpose
These data are reported in the School Accountability Report Card (SARC). This information is used by federal, state, county and local agencies to assess the physical fitness of California students.
Schools receive both summary and student by student information. These data are used by schools to determine the areas of concentration for physical education classes whose minutes of instruction are required by law. Parents are informed of the test results by mail.

Program Requirements and Test Description
The State Board of Education designated the FITNESSGRAM as the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for students in California public schools. The FITNESSGRAM is a comprehensive, health related physical fitness battery developed by the Cooper Institute. The primary goal of the FITNESSGRAM is to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity.

All students are required, in order to be eligible to graduate from high school, to take two years of physical education.

The list below outlines the required tests for all students in grades 9 and 10:
  • Aerobic Capacity
  • Body Composition
  • Abdominal/Trunk Strength
  • Strength and Endurance
  • Flexibility
