All eligible students must be offered the opportunity to take the test, but student participation is voluntary.

  • Grade 11 students who are not taking the Algebra II or Summative High School
  • Mathematics CST.
Program Requirements and Test Description

This program is a collaborative effort of the California public schools, State Board of Education, California Department of Education and the CSU. The two components include the Early Assessment of Readiness for College English and the Early Assessment of Readiness for College Mathematics. Students who participate in the optional EAP:
  • Will receive information about their readiness for college English and mathematics courses.
  • Will be able to use their senior year of high school to become better prepared for
  • college.
  • May be able to avoid taking non-credit remedial courses after entering college.
  • May be exempted from the CSU placement tests required for entering freshman.
The scores for the EAP will be based on CST questions selected by CSU, 15 EAP multiple-choice items each in English and mathematics and an essay. The EAP has several types of results for the English and mathematics tests:
  • Exempt—the student is exempt from taking the CSU’s English Placement Test (EPT) or the CSU’s Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) placement test. The student meets the standards for placement into college-level classes at the CSU. The exempt status is not a guarantee of admission to the CSU. Students are still required to apply to a CSU campus and will need to satisfy all CSU college preparatory coursework.
  • Non-Exempt—the student is not exempt from taking the CSU’s EPT or ELM. The student needs more preparation in English or mathematics skills and knowledge in the 12th grade.
  • Conditionally exempt (mathematics only)--The student is conditionally exempt from taking the CSU’s ELM. Conditionally exempt students would have been ready to take college level mathematics if they were now entering college. Mathematics knowledge and skills decline quickly when not used; therefore, those who receive conditional exemptions will not need to take the CSU’s mathematics placement examination if they successfully complete mathematics instruction during their senior year.
  • Incomplete-Students with an EAP English status of Incomplete do not yet have sufficient strong English skills to succeed in many required courses. If these students are accepted for admission to the CSU, they must take the EPT test.
The EAP is not an admission requirement or eligibility indicator for the CSU. The CSU will use the results only as placement criteria to determine what classes students should take during their freshman year if admitted to the CSU.

State Required Tests
  • Grade 11 English-Language Arts CST, plus additional multiple-choice questions and CSU EAP essay.
  • Algebra II or Summative High School Mathematics, plus additional multiple-choice questions.
District and schools are required to offer these tests. Student participation is voluntary.
