CAHSEE
California High School Exit Examination
(CAHSEE)
Students Tested
State and District Requirement
  • The state requires all students to take CAHSEE in the spring of their 10th grade year. The district has defined grade 10 students to be students who have earned credits equal to that of a grade 10 student as of the testing date.
  • Two additional opportunities (fall and spring) are offered each year in grade 11.
  • In 2007 – 2008, grade 12 students had five test opportunities.
Students Excluded from Testing
  • Students receiving special education services with explicit IEP statements that they are not on a diploma track.
  • Students with severe disabilities who participate in the CAPA test.
  • The state allows English learners a 24-month exemption from taking the test, but must pass the CAHSEE in order to receive a diploma. Grade 10 English Learners must take the CAHSEE in the census testing in the spring of their 10th grade year.
Test Description
CAHSEE is a standards-based criterion-referenced test that includes multiple-choice items for English-language arts and mathematics, plus one English-language arts essay. The mathematics test includes standards through grade 8/algebra. The English-language arts includes standards through grade 10.

Test Purpose
Senate Bill 2X was designed to “ensure that pupils who graduate from high school have demonstrated grade level competency in reading, writing, and mathematics consistent with the State Board of Education adopted academic standards.” All students in California are required to pass the CAHSEE to receive a high school diploma. Passing scores on both the English-language arts and mathematics tests are part of the requirements needed to obtain a high school diploma from LAUSD.

LAUSD students are provided a variety of intervention classes if they do not pass the test in the 10th grade. The Student and Parent Report tells the student, parent and school the percentage of correct responses the student had in each of the mathematics and English-language arts strands.

The grade 10 CAHSEE is also used for calculating the NCLB Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) performance and growth for high schools.
